James Feldkamp

About

James Feldkamp was born in Roseburg, Oregon, and is a retired Commander in the U.S. Navy. He attended Oregon State University, where he earned a BS in Business. After graduating, he started a distinguished U.S. Naval Flight Officer career. He was a countermeasures officer and navigator for the EA-6B, the Navy's electronic attack aircraft, and he flew aboard the USS Midway during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1991.

After his military service, he transitioned to the U.S. Naval Reserves and joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as a Special Agent in Norfolk, Virginia. He was part of the team that formed the Tidewater Joint Terrorism Task Force and was one of three pilots in the Norfolk office responsible for aerial surveillance of suspects in criminal and terrorist cases. In 2004, he resigned from the FBI to run for Oregon’s District 4 Congressional seat, representing the Republican Party in the 2004 and 2006 election cycles.

In 2007, he was recalled to active duty to help establish the National Maritime Intelligence-Integration Office (NMIO), a precursor office aimed at enhancing maritime security through better information-sharing across domestic and international entities. He has also contributed to academia, serving as an adjunct professor at George Washington University, George Mason University, and Georgetown University, where he taught courses on terrorism, both domestic and international. In addition, he authored and edited a textbook titled "Theory and Politics of Terrorism," published by Cognella Academic Publishing.

His professional experience includes roles as a Lead Consultant at Complete Threat Preparedness, Inc. (2017-Present), where he provides safety, security, and protection consultations, and as a Freelance Editor at Reedsy (2020-Present), where he reviews manuscripts on terrorism and intelligence. He also participated as a Global Ocean Racer in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race (2018-2022), visiting various countries, including the UK, Portugal, and Uruguay. Additionally, he served as an Adjunct Professor at National American University from 2015 to 2019, teaching courses on intelligence, terrorism, and weapon systems.

As the Branch Head for Outreach and Coordination at the Office of Global Maritime Situational Awareness, he enhanced maritime domain awareness by building strategic partnerships and facilitating information-sharing between U.S. and foreign government agencies. His efforts contributed to the Maritime Safety and Security Information System (MSSIS), which now covers over 240,000 miles of coastline.

Jim Feldkamp enjoys various sports and adventurous activities outside his professional career, including mountain climbing, skiing, scuba diving, flying, and sailing. He also participated in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and took part in the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain.

He holds an MA in International Affairs from The Catholic University of America (1996-1998), a Diploma in Strategic Planning and Operations from the U.S. Naval War College (1994-1996), a BS in Business from Oregon State University (1983-1986), and an AA from Linfield University (1981-1983), where he was part of the National Championship football team.

His service in the U.S. Navy marks James Feldkamp’s career, his contributions to counter-terrorism and maritime security, and his dedication to education. His diverse personal and professional interests reflect his commitment to excellence in all aspects of life.
